Netherlands: Are you working remotely as an expat?

Are you working remotely as an expat? Your taxes depend on where you live and where your employer is based.

Here’s what you need to know:

Tax residency: If you live in the Netherlands, you’ll likely pay taxes on your worldwide income here. If you live and work in the Netherlands while your employer is not based in the Netherlands, please check with your employer if they need to register as a Dutch employer and withhold Dutch payroll taxes on your salary and pay insurance premiums for you to make sure you are covered.

Double tax treaties: If you work for a company in another country, double taxation can be a concern. Use tax treaties between the Netherlands and your employer’s country to prevent paying taxes twice.

Social security contributions: Remote jobs can also mean that social security premiums are being paid in multiple jurisdictions. Review agreements like the EU social security rules or bilateral agreements in order to prevent this.

Optimize deductions: Home office costs, equipment, and other work-related expenses might be deductible depending on local tax laws.
